The FBM242 discrete output module contains 16 discrete output channels, all of which come from external sources and have a rated current of up to 2A at a DC voltage of 60 V. The relevant terminal components (TA) can provide discrete outputs to loads with 2 A 60 V DC voltage, relay outputs (120 V AC/125 V DC or 240 V AC), or relay outputs with distribution and fuses. Each output is completely isolated from other channels and ground. The module connects the electrical output signal of the control processor to the field device. It executes digital I/O applications, supports ladder logic, and provides fail safe configuration options for output.

The design of the compact FBM242 module is narrower than the standard 200 series FBM. It has a sturdy and durable acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) shell that provides physical protection for circuits.
According to ISA standard S71.04, the enclosure designed specifically for installing FBM can provide different levels of environmental protection, up to G3 level in harsh environments.
The front end of the module is equipped with light-emitting diodes (LEDs), which can visually display the operating status of the module and the discrete status of each output point.
